50th Annual Conference of the Anglo-Catalan Society
11th Colloquium of the North American Catalan Society

New Directions for Catalan Studies

Eton College, England, 17-19 December 2004

Call for Papers

The last thirty years have been a period of unprecedented growth and development of Catalan Studies both in the United Kingdom and the United States. Increasing numbers of universities are including Catalan in their curricula, and research on Catalan culture shows signs of considerable health. This seems then the time to address important questions about the past and the future or our field: How has the rise of theory affected Catalan Studies? Is Catalan cultural studies possible or desirable? What can the place of our field be within the present state of Modern Languages? What can our role be in the promotion of Catalan culture abroad? In what directions should our efforts for innovation go?

This joint conference, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Anglo-Catalan Society, aims to strengthen academic and friendship links between Catalanists across the Atlantic, and seeks to act as a forum to reflect on the trajectory of Catalan Studies since 1975 and to explore new avenues for the analysis of Catalan culture and the future development of our field.

There will be three keynote lectures by major exponents of Catalan cultural life: filmmaker Ventura Pons, novelist Maria-Antňnia Oliver, and cultural promoter Eliseu Climent (pending confirmation).

Proposals for 20 minutes' papers are welcome on any area of Catalan studies, including history, language, literature, visual arts, music, film and television, politics, popular culture, etc.

All proposals should include a title and an abstract of approximately 200 words. Send your proposals by 15 July 2004 to:
